Chanakya Essay Competitions
Chinmaya Mission Alpharetta is pleased to announce essay competitions for grade school children. All are welcome and encouraged to participate.
Who can qualify?
Students from the following grades are encouraged to create original essays and submit:
- Elementary school students (1st – 5th)
- Middle school students (6th – 8th)
- High school students (9th – 12th)
Note: As an example, a rising 6th grader is considered as a 6th grader, a rising 9th grader is considered as a 9th grader
Time lines:
Submission by: 10pm (EST), August 16th, 2009
Winners Announcement: September 13th, 2009
Chanakya Showtime: 2.30pm Sunday, Sep 13, 2009
A panel of judges will review the entries, and prizes will be given to winning essays in all levels.
Essay Topics:
Elementary School:
Story: One day Chanakya was walking through a forest when he tripped over an overgrown kusa grass. Kusa grass is difficult to uproot and hence people leave it to overgrow without destroying it. But Chanakya is no ordinary person. He poured sugar syrup on the grass. Little Chandragupta asked why Chankya did that; Chanakya replied that the syrup will sweeten the roots which in turn would attract ants that would ultimately destroy the grass; and it indeed happened.
Question: In your own words, write what you can learn from this story
Middle School:

1. How would you feel living in Chanakya’s time?
2. What fascinated you the most about Chanakya’s life?

Eliciting examples, write your view points in support or against any aspects of Chanakya’s life.

One individual can submit only one entry and only in one category
On the first page, please include:
your name, parent’s name, phone number, email id, and grade level (Elementary school, Middle school or High school)
abstract of your essay, not exceeding 5 lines
Length of essay; not including first page, not exceeding:
2 pages for Elementary school
3 pages for Middle school and High school
Language: English

MSWord (please make sure it is in doc version, not docx)
Font & size: Times New Roman, 12
Single spaced
